Martin features in our instrumental, progressive and classic rock sequences.

Martin Barre performed in a number of Birmingham-based bands (when he also played saxophone) before auditioning for Jethro Tull in late-1968 after the departure of Mick Abrahams. Together with Ian Anderson he defined the band’s sound for the next four decades. Amongst the highlights – which very much set the standard for progressive rock guitar – are his solos on ‘Aqualung; and ‘Locomotive Breath’.

Barre has incorporated elements of folk and classical into his work, not least his solo albums starting with ‘A Trick Of Memory’ (1994), ‘The Meeting’ (1996) and ‘Stage Left’ (2003).

In 2013 it became evident that Ian Anderson would continue to work with a number of musicians for his current and future projects, but without Barre. The guitarist announced a new solo album ‘Away With Words’ and a European tour in October 2013.

Since that time, he has released several band albums and in 2019 celebrated Tull’s 50th anniversary on tour in the USA and Europe.
